An Inspiring Story of Helping Pets in Ukraine

Let’s delve into one of many inspiring stories within U-Hearts Foundation, where dedicated volunteer Maryna Nikitchenko shares her experience of helping homeless cats and dogs. Maryna, residing in a village in the Cherkasy region, has spent her entire life rescuing and caring for stray animals. Through her volunteer work, she’s not only given shelter to abandoned animals but also offered them a second chance. Her home has become a haven for pets, reflecting the compassionate mission of U-Hearts.

Maryna’s story began with a strong childhood passion for animals, and this passion only deepened over the years. Rather than purchasing pets from breeders, she made it her mission to rescue stray animals. One unforgettable rescue was a puppy she found abandoned on a rural road. Malnourished and weighing only 4 kg, the puppy was frightened and unfamiliar with basic needs like eating and drinking from a bowl. Maryna devoted time and care to help him recover and grow. Today, that same dog weighs a healthy 35 kg and has become an energetic and joyful companion.

In another recent case, a group of local children brought Maryna a kitten, now named Ryzhyk. Frail and in poor health, Ryzhyk needed intensive care, including round-the-clock feedings from a syringe. Under Maryna’s devoted care, Ryzhyk gained strength and is now ready to join a new family, where he can continue his life surrounded by love and warmth.

For Maryna, moments like these are a source of joy and a reason to keep going. Seeing the transformation in each animal—from vulnerable to thriving—reminds her that her work is not in vain. Each pet she rescues not only enriches her life but also brings joy to the families who adopt them. For her and countless others who work with the U-Hearts Foundation, knowing they are part of a community that supports and celebrates rescue work is what keeps them motivated, day in and day out.
