Animal welfare is a pressing issue in Ukraine, especially in regions affected by war and instability. The U-Hearts, a charitable foundation, is dedicated to supporting shelters and individuals who work tirelessly to help stray dogs and cats. By funding essential programs, our team provides food, medical care, and shelter to thousands of homeless pets, giving them a chance for a better future.
Supporting Shelters to Help Stray Dogs and Cats
One of the U-Hearts Foundation team’s core missions is to help stray dogs and cats by partnering with local animal shelters and rescuers. These shelters provide safe havens for abandoned animals, many of whom have endured abuse or injury. The U-Hearts team ensures that resources are available for food supplies, sterilization programs, and medical treatment. This approach not only improves the quality of life for these animals but also reduces the number of strays on the streets.
Inspiring Stories: Helping Homeless Pets in Donetsk Region
In the Donetsk region, Smagina Olena stands out as a remarkable example of compassion and dedication. An agronomist from Kostyantynivka, Olena cares for 32 cats and 42 dogs. Many of these animals were abandoned by neighbors, brought to her by the military, or found their way to her on their own. Her unwavering commitment to help homeless pets is reflected in the inspiring stories of the animals she has rescued.
Hena the Dog: A Resilient Survivor
Hena, a trained dog evacuated from Lysychansk during heavy shelling, found a second chance at life under Olena’s care. Once a competition-winning dog, Hena’s journey from a shelter in Kramatorsk to Olena’s home is a testament to the power of kindness and determination.
Puppies Rescued Under Fire
During an intense military operation, newborn puppies were saved from under heavy fire. Olena stepped in to care for them, ensuring their survival and eventual adoption. Today, two of these puppies live happily in Germany, thanks to her efforts to help stray dogs and cats in even the most challenging circumstances.
Zhuzha: A Mother’s Courage
Zhuzha, a pregnant dog rescued from the Toretsk area, disappeared shortly after arriving at Olena’s shelter. A week later, Olena found her and her 10 puppies hidden in a pile of brush. All 10 puppies are now healthy and thriving under her care, awaiting adoption into loving homes.
Nikopol Shelter for Animals: A Chance for Life
In 2017, Olena founded the Nikopol Shelter for Animals, “A Chance for Life,” after witnessing the cruelty faced by stray animals in her community. Located near the frontline in Nikopol, the shelter currently cares for over 300 dogs. It provides a sanctuary for elderly, disabled, and sick animals, as well as those recovering from abuse. The shelter also actively sterilizes stray dogs and cats to control their population.
“The greatest motivation for my work is seeing photos of happy dogs with their new families. I am deeply grateful for organizations like U-Hearts Foundation and Greater Good, which understand the struggles of abandoned animals in Ukraine and provide invaluable support,” says Olena.
