The U-Hearts Foundation has been doing its best to help homeless pets across Ukraine, offering crucial care, food, and shelter to animals left behind due to the crisis. With its network of volunteers and partners, U-Hearts extends support to both shelters and individuals committed to animal rescue. By providing medical aid, rehabilitation, and adoption support, the foundation’s mission centers on transforming the lives of these pets and their caregivers.
Over time, U-Hearts has made significant strides in helping pet shelters that are vital in providing temporary refuge for stray dogs and cats. By covering medical costs, food supplies, and essential materials, U-Hearts enables shelters to focus on their mission of saving lives and preparing animals for adoption or reunification with families. Ensuring that no shelter has to turn away animals due to a lack of resources is a cornerstone of U-Hearts’ work.
Shelters offer critical care to help homeless pets, who would otherwise face hunger, disease, and danger on the streets. The dedication of U-Hearts-supported volunteers helps these animals survive and find new beginnings after abandonment or crisis. This article shares two stories showcasing how U-Hearts and its partners make a tangible difference and help stray dogs and cats.
Story 1: Iryna and Khrystyna – Help Stray Dogs And Cats in Donetsk region
Iryna Kohanenko and Khrystyna Kachan, from Kostiantynivka in Donetsk region, embody the compassion of the U-Hearts Foundation’s mission. Both lifelong animal lovers, they have been rescuing animals since childhood. As the war intensified, they witnessed more animals left behind and began taking in as many as possible, providing food, shelter, and care. They now care for over 100 cats and 30 dogs, each receiving individual attention.
One of their toughest cases involved a dog named Nichka, who arrived with a large, untreated tumor. Despite her suffering, no one helped Nichka—until Iryna acted. With the support of U-Hearts and a local vet, Nichka’s tumor was removed, and she began her journey to recovery. Today, Nichka is healthy and happy, thanks to Iryna and Khrystyna’s dedication to help homeless pets. This story underscores why it is crucial to help stray dogs and cats on a daily basis.
Story 2: Animal Rescue Kharkiv – Saving Lives Along the Eastern Frontline
Supported by U-Hearts, Animal Rescue Kharkiv has been rescuing animals from danger since 2015. When the war escalated in 2022, they expanded their efforts to frontline areas, saving over 22,000 animals, including more than 16,000 from combat zones. U-Hearts’ ongoing support is crucial, as these animals are often stranded without food, water, or shelter in perilous conditions.
Animal Rescue Kharkiv now operates a medical aid center and a rehabilitation facility called The Little Prince, specializing in care for rescued animals. Their daily rescues involve high-risk operations in conflict areas, yet their commitment to helping homeless pets remains unwavering. They provide medical care to injured animals, assist in reunifying them with families, and facilitate adoption for displaced pets.
Animal Rescue Kharkiv’s work reflects U-Hearts’ values of providing resources, in addition, they help pet shelters and rescue teams in need. Without U-Hearts’ help, many of these animals would face a bleak future. As the situation evolves, the need for support from organizations like U-Hearts becomes ever more pressing.
