One of the volunteers making a difference is Vlada from Mykolaiv. She has loved animals since childhood but became actively involved in helping homeless pets a few years before the full-scale invasion. As the number of stray animals on the streets grew, Vlada took it upon herself to care for them. Many of these animals once had a home but were left behind due to the war.
Since then, Vlada has dedicated herself to rescuing animals: she has sterilized many, taken some into her home, and continues to feed and treat those still living on the streets. Today, she looks after 28 cats and 15 dogs. She loves them dearly and ensures they receive medical attention whenever needed.
However, feeding so many animals is a massive challenge, especially since Vlada lives on a disability pension. This is why support from Greater Good Charities is invaluable. Quality food means health and survival for her animals.
Animal Shelter Story: Kseniia from Mykolaiv
Kseniia has been helping stray dogs and cats for many years—sterilizing, treating, feeding, and finding them new homes. She firmly believes that every animal deserves a loving family that provides food, medical care, vaccinations, and, most importantly, affection.
Some animals, however, stay with her forever. These are pets returned due to illness or special needs—those requiring ongoing medical support, suffering from chronic conditions, or even missing limbs or eyesight. Despite the difficulties, Kseniia continues her work, ensuring that these animals receive the best possible care.
The war has significantly worsened the situation for stray animals. Many pets were abandoned when their owners fled. But Kseniia never left Mykolaiv—she stayed to help. One of her most touching rescues is a cat named Valusha. Her neighbor abandoned her in the fall of 2022 when they left the city. Valusha was already 10 years old, weak, and malnourished. Kseniia took her in, provided medical treatment, and ensured her safety before sterilization.
Today, Valusha is 12 years old and thriving, thanks to Kseniia’s dedication.
